The adults will feed from a variety of different flowers and the males are known to exhibit puddling behaviors on regular occasions.

The Black Swordtails are almost exclusively found in tropical forest, particularly coastal tropical forest and they rarely venture out of that area.
Males patrol the tropical forests looking for receptive females. After mating, the females look for suitable host plants to lay their eggs on. The caterpillars feed on the host plant until they are ready to pupate.

The genus Graphium and Papilio are both considered to be very close relatives. As caterpillars the two genera look very similar except for differences in segments near the head. As adults, the Papilio with tails usually have tails which are rounded at the tip. On the other hand, the Graphium species with tails tend to have longer tails, which are roughly the same width throughout.
